Heart Health Begins at Home

Establish healthy habits at an early age

With the new school year approaching and so many things to manage in order to get children ready, it can become easy to overlook one of the most fundamental aspects of a child’s life: nutrition. During vacation many routines may be neglected, and healthy meals shared with the family may be overlooked. With that in mind, the new school year can be seen as a fresh start and a way of getting the entire family back on a healthy track.

Did you know that according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease has been the number one cause of death in the United States for the past 80 years? Statistics show that every 34 seconds, someone in the U.S. dies from heart disease. That’s more than an astonishing 2,500 deaths in a day.

Sadly, children are now starting to form part of these statistics, with more children than ever diagnosed with heart disease.

Tedious tests such as cholesterol screenings have typically been an unwelcome part of middle age. But recently, and for the first time, doctors with the American Academy of Pediatrics have begun recommending such health measures for a greater number of children as young as two years of age. Under the same new guidelines, cholesterol-lowering drugs would be prescribed to eight-year-olds.

The question is- where do parents draw the line? With obesity rates among children in the first world higher than ever, experts agree that lowering cholesterol is essential to reducing the risk of heart disease. But shouldn’t we try natural and safer methods first? How about lifestyle changes?

Prevention is key

It is understandably hard to balance family, work, and social obligations while ensuring that everyone gets a balanced diet that includes sufficient fiber, vitamins and minerals. This is especially true during this time of the year when so many things need to be accomplished and there’s so little time. Add to that the stress of traffic, managing hectic schedules, and many parents find themselves running to the nearest fast food restaurant to pick up dinner for the family.

Actually, proper planning can mean prevention of deadly diseases in the long run, not to mention the prospect of a better quality of life. Children that receive adequate nutrition and exercise are far less prone to suffer from mood swings and related disorders, as well as diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, among others.

What can parents do to make it happen? The first step is to adopt the necessary changes in lifestyle themselves. It’s hardly any good for parents to impose certain dietary restrictions and lifestyle changes on their children when they don’t adhere to them, too. Planning to stick to a healthier lifestyle should involve and engage the entire family.

Natural alternatives to help reduce cholesterol naturally include garlic, fish, flaxseed, and a diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables. Flaxseed, with its high concentration of omega fatty acids, is one of leaders of the pack for its cholesterol-reducing properties. Mix ground flaxseed in smoothies, or use it to top cereals and oatmeal. Remember that it is high in fiber, which is excellent for the digestive tract, and therefore the immune system —but should be incorporated slowly into the diet.

Childhood is the stage when most people will develop life-long habits. That means keeping couch time at a minimum and ensuring a healthy, nutritious diet, plenty of exercise and activities—which will instill healthy habits that can last a lifetime and carry on for generations to come!

Summer days drifting away…

Tips for syncing into the new season

Vacations are here, which inevitably leads to shifts in daily routines and time management habits. On the flip side, this usually means less stress and time spent worrying, and more time to dedicate to family and friends.

To help maintain healthy lifestyles during this shift in season, the following few simple tips can help everyone transition smoothly.

Nutrition: Meal times typically must be re-scheduled, but this shouldn’t pose a problem. Natural remedies can be used to encourage picky eaters. Try lighter recipes that can be quickly thrown together with the abundance of seasonal fruits and vegetables available during summer. Seasonal produce has a vibrant, fresh flavor that needs little dressings. Try adding fruits to your salads as well. The tart ones work best such as green apples, strawberries, and tangy citrus. Natural remedies can also encourage picky eaters to try new vegetables!

Daily chores: Being part of a family is like being part of a team. Everyone should put some effort into it daily. Even when children are on vacation, they should be responsible for a chore that will occupy some of their time on a daily basis. This gives them perspective, teaches them responsibility and keeps them from watching too much TV.

Leisure: Since summer nights are so pleasant, this can mean extra time for a soothing walk outdoors or simply sitting outside counting stars with your child. These precious moments have the ability to create memories that are often treasured for a life time.

Sleep: Even though children should have a set bed time, 8 o’clock does not look the same in winter then in it does in summer. How would you like to go “night-night” in broad daylight? It can be confusing to say the least. Try gradually adjusting your child’s bedtime to a later time. If your child has difficulty adjusting to time change natural remedies that maintain healthy sleep patterns can be used to restore balance.

Dangers of Dry Drowning. Learn how to stay safe!

With vacation time for kids officially here, it is likely many of them will be headed towards the closest body of water to cool off, and many of us adults have fond summer memories of enjoying similar fun with our own friends. However, a little known phenomenon likely few of us has heard of—dry drowning – may put a deadly damper on carefree fun unless precautions are taken.

Not much is known about dry drowning, also known as a shallow water blackout. A person who dry-drowns typically displays few or no symptoms when the actual drowning is occurring, and sometimes symptoms or effects appear hours after actually being in water.

This shouldn’t be a cause to panic or to forbid your children from enjoying the many benefits of swimming and playing in water. Dry drowning is considered rare; however, there are some warning signs you should learn to spot.

When a small amount of water is inhaled and goes to the lungs, in some people it can produce a delayed reaction. Experts say the first sign to look for is breathing difficulties. This can be one of the most obvious signs, though it doesn’t always occur.

Extreme fatigue is another feature to watch for. Though this is harder to pinpoint, once oxygen stops flowing in necessary amounts to the brain, extreme fatigue and inadequate responses to stimulus can be observed.

Odd or uncharacteristic behavior is another sign of the possibility of water in the lungs, preventing the brain from receiving vital oxygenation. Spotting unusual behavior can be tricky when it comes to children, whose moods can fluctuate from excited and happy one minute to cranky and restless the next. Parents know their kids in and out, and are the best to judge if a certain behavior is unusual.

As far as maintaining overall wellness during times of play or everyday, natural remedies can be used to soothe excitable tempers and promote nervous system health in children of all ages.

Also, natural remedies can be kept at hand in your first aid kit. Summer is a time when insect bites, cuts, scrapes, and wounds, are more likely. And treating these naturally is always a great option!

As with all approaches to health, a proactive, preventative stance is always best to help maintain wellness and enjoy summer!

Heart Screening Alert for ADD/ADHD Children

Do you know the risks of using perscription meds?

The American Heart Association issued a recommendation for all children currently taking or diagnosed to begin taking prescription ADD/ADHD medication to receive a thorough cardiovascular screening.

This warning follows last year's FDA ordinance to ADD/ADHD drug manufacturers to include warning labels on drugs regarding the increased risk for cardiac complications among those with underlying heart conditions, as prescription ADD/ADHD stimulants raise both heart rate and blood pressure.

What makes this discovery more disturbing in regards to the risk of heart troubles surrounding these medications is that heart disease often goes undetected in children. The AHA reports suggest that 33 to 42 percent of pediatric heart patients also have ADD/ADHD. From 1999 to 2004, the FDA reported 19 children on prescription ADD/ADHD medicine who died suddenly, and 26 showed signs of heart complications, including stroke, heart attack, pain, and/or heart palpitations.

In addition, Health Canada (the Canadian version of the FDA) banned Adderall, a commonly prescribed drug for ADD/ADHD, after a review of FDA records of self-reported deaths of 12 American children.

ADD/ADHD is the one of the most common disorders among American children, according to the American Heart Association, with more than 2.5 million children in the U.S. currently on prescription medications for ADD/ADHD, and an estimated 4-12% with the condition itself.

Since so many heart conditions in children go undiagnosed as symptoms are rarely exhibited, the importance to screen a child on medication or about to begin treatment is necessary to help prevent against these potential risks. Many children have been properly identified as having heart disease via a thorough exam. The AHA recommends obtaining a detailed patient and family medical history, a physical exam with heart monitoring and blood pressure, and an electrocardiogram (ECG). If the patient and parents agree to continue on with prescription treatment even with these identified risk factors, it is wise to consult a pediatric cardiologist and have the child receive check-ups every few months. While these extra precautions may seem unnecessary, adding a stimulant to an existing heart condition could be deadly.

While some children respond well to prescription ADD/ADHD treatment, it is always best to consider an alternative or holistic approach to a child's health. Especially since the safety factor of these conventional treatments continues to come into question, herbal and homeopathic remedies can provide effective, safe relief without compromising health or risking serious side effects. Natural remedies have been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years to support the healthy functioning of the brain and nervous system, helping to encourage normal and efficient concentration and memory functioning.

As most conventional medicines work only to treat symptoms and problems in isolation, natural medicine strives to create holistic balance in the body to support systemic health, relieve ailments, and prevent future disease. Incorporating changes in a number of areas including diet, lifestyle, surroundings and emotional elements can also be very beneficial in promoting overall health.

"I developed BrightSpark™ as a homeopathic remedy to assist me in the treatment of children in my clinical practice. This remedy has been very effective in helping children who presented difficulties in concentration and appropriate classroom behavior due to a tendency to be impulsive, overly stimulated and restless, often along with irritable mood and a resistance to parental discipline. Many of these children went from being the classroom clown to willingly settling down to complete tasks, while still retaining brightness and creativity - to the great relief of parents and teachers alike!" - Michele Carelse, Clinical Psychologist

"My 9-year-old ... forgets EVERYTHING you tell him. There is a big difference since he has been taking the Triple Complex Brain Tonic™ - the other day he even reminded me about a school meeting. It is such a relief to find something that works..." - Sandra G.

"I have a 6 year old boy ...[who was] on every possible medication and it was to the point where nothing was working and he would be up all night long for 3-4 nights in a row and he was getting in trouble at school daily. I even lost my job due to the amount of phone calls I received from his school. I started him on the Focus Formula™ and BrightSpark™ about 2 weeks ago, and at first thought it was going to be a waste of money but I was wrong. After about 3 days I got a whole new son. He's eating every time I turn around, already gaining weight, has a new personality without the "drugs" and his teacher even called to ask if I put him on something new and said he was completely different in class, almost as if she got a new student!!! This REALLY works, trust me, I'm the most skeptical person out there and here I am writing my very own testimonial!! It's a miracle, I have my son back and he has his "mind" back. Thank you!!!" - April, PA, USA
